Dyne Technology supply a complete range of Dyne Test Pens and Dyne Inks to measure surface energy. Using a Dyne test pen or a Dyne test fluid gives quick and easy results indicating surface wettability.
The purpose of surface treatment of polymer-based materials is to increase surface wettability through electrical discharge. The low surface energy of polymer-based substrates often leads to poor adhesion of inks, glues and coatings. To obtain optimum adhesion, it is necessary to increase the surface energy of the substrate to just above that of the material to be applied. Surface Treatment with either Corona or Plasma results in good wetting of the material over the surface of the substrate and so improves adhesion. For optimum adhesion when printing, gluing or coating on various substrates, it is necessary to obtain a high surface energy. Determining the surface energy can be achieved by measuring contact-angle or by use of Surface Energy Test Inks (Dyne level testing). This form of measurement is based on the ASTM method for measuring the surface energy of polyethylene film. When the Dyne level test ink is applied to the surface, the liquid will either form a continuous film on the surface or pull back into small droplets. If the Dyne test fluid remains as a film for 3 seconds, the substrate will have a minimum surface energy of that ink value, expressed in mN/m (Dynes). Should the Dyne test liquid reticulate, the surface energy of the substrate is lower than that of the liquid itself. The exact surface energy (Dyne level) can be determined by applying a range of increasing or decreasing values of Dyne test fluids.

Use a slight pressure to draw the pen tip across the surface to be tested. If the ink lines shrink or bead within 1-2 seconds then the surface is NOT treated to the level 38-40 Dynes. If the ink lines remain as marked and do not shrink then the test sample surface IS treated to the level 38-40 Dynes or higher

DYNE TEST INKS
Type A:- Formamide & 2-Ethoxyethanol based:
Supplied in 20ml bottles (to ISO 8296) with integral brush applicator, containing: formamide, ethoxyethanol & dye - (Toxic), not for use on PVC. Available in all values from 30 to 46 and 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 67, 73 mN/m (Dynes)
Type B:- Ethanol based - (NON TOXIC):
Supplied in 20ml bottles (to Tantec standards) with integral brush applicator, containing: ethanol - (Flammable), not for use on PP. Available in all values from 30 to 50 and 52, 54, 56, 58 & 73 mN/m (Dynes)
Types A & B are available as follows:
- Standard Kit of 6 bottles in carrying case (specify Type A or B): 36, 40, 44, 48, 52 & 56 mN/m.
- Kit of 6 bottles in carrying case (select any 6 values as required) (specify Type A or B)
